Animals of Londinium and beyond: The Wild Escape Family Day

In celebration of Earth Day 2023, London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE is exploring animals past and present as part of The Wild Escape, a major new Art Fund project uniting hundreds of museums, schools and families in a celebration of UK wildlife and creativity. Animals have been a source of inspiration for many artists with examples of animal art dating back to pre-historic times. From art about rural life and growth, to myths and legends, animal art helps us explore our relationship to wildlife and can help us think about how we care for animals and the environment.
From snakes to birds to bulls, London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE is alive with animals! This Earth Day, discover the animals in our collection with a range of fun activities:
- Follow our trail to discover animals hiding in plain sight
- Find out how we know what animals were in Londinium and why the Romans were inspired by to use their images as decoration
- Be inspired to create a colourful bird feeder to help look after the wildlife of today
These activities are fun for everyone, but we recommend participation from age 3+.
Led by Art Fund and supported by Arts Council England, The Wild Escape is an opportunity for the next generation to explore the big subjects of biodiversity and the environment, through the power of art and imagination. The Wild Escape is made possible by lead support from Arts Council England, with additional support from Art Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies and a group of generous individuals and trusts.
